Buying a Truck Mounted Drill Rig: Price Guide
If you're in the market for a truck mounted drill rig, one of your first questions is probably: how much does it cost? The answer depends on a lot of factors — size, configuration, options, and where you're buying it from. Here's a rough price guide to help you budget.
Price Ranges by Size
Small Rigs (150-250HP). These are light-duty rigs used for water well drilling, shallow geothermal, and workover operations. A new rig in this range starts around $100,000 to $180,000. Used rigs can be half that price, if you can find one in good condition.
Medium Rigs (350-550HP). This is the most popular size for oilfield workover and medium-depth drilling. A new rig runs $200,000 to $400,000, depending on the chassis, mast height, and options. This is the sweet spot for most contractors.
Large Rigs (750-1000HP). These are heavy-duty rigs for deep drilling and big workover jobs. Expect to pay $500,000 to $800,000 or more for a new one. These rigs are serious business — they're not for hobbyists.
What Affects the Price?
Beyond horsepower, the biggest cost drivers are: the chassis (Mercedes or Volvo is way more expensive than Sinotruk), the mast type (telescopic vs. lattice), the mud pump system, and well control equipment. A base rig might seem cheap, but by the time you add all the options, the price can double.
Also don't forget shipping and customs. If you're importing from China, add another 10-15% to the total cost, and factor in a few weeks for customs clearance.
FAQ
Q: Is it cheaper to buy a new rig or a used one?
A: Used rigs are cheaper upfront, but they can be a money pit if they're worn out. If you don't know how to inspect a rig, buying new is safer — you get a warranty and you know exactly what you're getting.
